Description

Delicious bars combining the classic flavors of apple pie and salted caramel in a buttery crust.


Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 3–4 medium apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed (for caramel)
  • ½ cup heavy cream (for caramel)
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (for caramel)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, melted butter, egg yolk, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until crumbly, then press into a greased 8×8 inch baking dish. Bake for 10 minutes and let cool.
  3. Toss sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Spread over the cooled crust and bake for 20–25 minutes.
  4. In a saucepan, melt granulated sugar over medium heat until golden. Stir in butter, then slowly add heavy cream, whisking constantly. Remove from heat and add sea salt.
  5. Pour the caramel over the baked apple filling and return to the oven for 10 minutes.
  6. Let cool completely before slicing into squares.

Notes

Store in an airtight container. Keeps in the fridge for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
