- 1 box of chocolate cake mix
- Ingredients required by the cake mix (usually eggs, water, and oil)
- 1 cup of sweet or sour cherries (fresh or canned)
- 1/4 cup of sugar (optional)
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 2 cups of heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup of powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Chocolate shavings (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven as directed on the cake mix. Follow cake box instructions and bake until done. Let it cool completely.
- If using fresh cherries, pit and slice them. Combine cherries with sugar and cornstarch, and cook over medium heat until syrupy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whip heavy cream until firm, then add powdered sugar and vanilla, and beat until peaks form.
- In a trifle dish, layer broken chocolate cake, cherry filling, and whipped cream. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
- Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
